Merve Nur TUNÇ

Merve Nur is PhD student in ProCeD lab since 01.11.2021 working on the resistance to the last-resort antibiotic colistin in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Development of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains pose a major clinical challenge to infection treatment worldwide. Polymixin E (colistin), carbapenems, and tigecycline alone or in combination therapy have become the last-resort antibiotics for treating infections caused by MDR bacteria. However, resistance to these reserve antibiotics too is increasingly being reported worldwide. Among these therapies, an emerging approach is to find other agents that will synergistically restore the efficacy of these antibiotics. The aim of the project is to combine ground-breaking fluorescence microscopy techniques with genetic and cell biology approaches to investigate the mechanisms underlying the synergistic antibacterial activity of a recently approved CF drug in combination with colistin in the Gram-negative pathogen P. aeruginosa.
