Micalis Institute

About us

Welcome to the Micalis Institute, a joint research unit between INRAE, AgroParisTech, and the University of Paris-Saclay. Micalis is composed of 112 researchers and teacher-researchers, 74 research engineers and technicians, 22 administrative staff, and over 160 doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, contract engineers and technicians, and student interns.

At Micalis, our focus is on pioneering and impactful research related to microorganisms that influence food, gut microbiota, and sustainable food production, all pivotal to human health. The microorganisms we study are integral to:

Our missions

The Micalis Institute is driven by three core objectives:

Research

We conduct cutting-edge research in food microbiology and health to unravel the complex relationships between food, food-associated bacteria, and gut microbiota with human health and diseases triggered by food-borne pathogens. Our work spans a range of scientific areas, including molecular microbiology, microbial ecology, biotechnology, synthetic microbiology, and synthetic ecology. We place a strong emphasis on both fundamental and applied research concerning the interactions between commensal and pathogenic microorganisms and their host impacts.

Valorization

We are dedicated to translating the insights gained from our basic research into practical applications to tackle societal challenges across food, human and animal health, and biotechnology sectors. This translational research aims to make a tangible difference in these fields, leveraging our scientific discoveries for broader societal benefits.

Education

We actively engage in teaching and training activities at the University of Paris-Saclay, committed to disseminating knowledge and educating the next generation of scientists. This educational mission is supported by the significant teaching contributions of our faculty from UPSaclay and AgroParisTech, along with the growing involvement of INRAE scientists in these efforts.

Research in Micalis at a glance

As we continue to explore and understand the microscopic foundations of health and disease, Micalis stands at the forefront of microbiological research, fostering innovation and education for a healthier world.

Thematic pillars

The Micalis Institute is at the forefront of microbiological research, housing 23 research teams. These teams are strategically grouped under three thematic pillars, each with a specific scientific focus to advance our understanding and management of microbial systems.

Transversal research Axes

These axes integrate the efforts of multiple teams across the thematic pillars and are pivotal in fostering innovative research directions.
