Marie-Laure Michel is a senior researcher in the team “Interactions of commensal and probiotic microorganisms with the host”.
She obtained her PhD in Immunology from Paris Sorbonne University in 2008, and carried out her post-doctoral research initially at the Cancer Research Institute in London and later at the Institute Necker-Enfants Malades in Paris. Her research has focused on innate T cells such as NKT and gamma/delta T cells, and on characterizing their development and regulation. She joined the ProbiHôte team at INRAE in 2015 and obtained a Habilitation to Direct Research (HDR) from the Paris Saclay University in 2023.
At the MICALIS institute, she develops the microbiota/immunity axis and its impact on gut inflammation. Her projects focus on deciphering the mechanisms and molecules by which these two partners communicate, while also considering the food aspect. These molecules are poorly characterized, but hold a key to understanding the transition from homeostasis (stable state) to deregulation (intestinal inflammation). To this end, she studies microbiota-derived metabolites and commensals to identify their role and understand their mechanisms, and investigates the impact of fermented food matrices on the immune system.
