Matthieu Jules is Professor of Systems and Synthetic Biology (SSB) at AgroParisTech (APT, Paris) and head of the SyBER team since 2020. M. Jules obtained his PhD in 2004 in the Department of “Engineering of Biological Systems and Process” at INSA (Toulouse, France) under the supervision of Professor Jean-Marie François. He then carried out post-doctoral studies at the Pasteur Institute under the supervision of Dr. Carmen Buchrieser. In 2007, he took the position of INRAE Researcher in the team of Dr. Stéphane Aymerich. He obtained his HDR (Habilitation) in 2016, and in 2017, he was appointed Professor at AgroParisTech.
M Jules is molecular biologist and biochemical engineer by training and has specialized in gene regulation, molecular physiology and Gram-positive bacteria. His main research areas are in developing controlled gene expression systems, the molecular biology of global C-regulation, bacterial SSB to understand basic cellular functions, metabolic and genome engineering in bacteria, phages and synthetic microbial consortia. He has authored publications (as of May 2024, 36 articles | h-index 22 on WoS) in leading journals (including Science, Sci adv, Mol Sys Biol, PNAS, Nucleic Acids Res, mBio, Metab Eng). He has coordinated and participated to several projects, including pre-industrial, industrial, European and ANR-funded projects, supervise(s/d) or co-supervise(s/d) 12 PhD students and 4 post-docs since 2009, is expert reviewer in SSB for regional, national (ANR) and European (ERC) funding agencies and peer reviewer for several scientific journals and is a member of the council of the UPSaclay Graduate School of Life Sciences and Health and of the Board of Directors of AgroParisTech. In addition, he coordinates the Master 1 program in Plant and Microbial molecular Biology, the Master 2 program in Systems and Synthetic Biology and the Center for Interdisciplinary Microbial Sciences from the Paris-Saclay University.
