Fighting Antimicrobial Resistance

In less than a century, the use of antibiotics has led to the selection, emergence and spread of resistant bacterial strains. Described as a silent pandemic by the WHO, antimicrobial resistance is considered to be one of the greatest threats to humanity, due to its major impact in terms of morbidity and mortality, and could be the world’s leading cause of death by 2050. It is now urgent to find alternative methods to antibiotics for combating bacterial infections in a One Health approach in order to protect the environment and reduce healthcare burden and cost in both human and veterinary medicine. In conjunction with the correct use of antimicrobials, and based on new strategies, several levers are envisioned to limit the emergence and spread of resistance, and to combat and prevent bacterial infections. With a wide range of expertise in microbiology and driven by internal funds, the Micalis unit has set a transversal axis pooling its strengths in this area to help to reduce the use of antibiotics and prevent infections in human and animal.
